The 1922 Duesenberg Model A is one of the most iconic cars in American history. Though not as famous as its later siblings—the S, SJ, and SSJ—it was the first production car by the Duesenberg brothers, Fred and August. Built for Speed and Reliability

Before making passenger cars, Duesenberg built race cars. From 1913 to 1934, at least one Duesenberg competed in every Indianapolis 500 race. In 1920, seven Duesenbergs raced, with five finishing in the top ten. This racing success helped promote their road cars, much like Ferrari today.

One famous test of the Model A’s reliability was a 3,155-mile simulated cross-country drive. The car was driven non-stop, except for tyre changes, with the engine running at 3,000 rpm. Even driver swaps happened without stopping. It finished the challenge in 105 hours, averaging 30 mph—a remarkable feat for its time.

A Rare and Valuable Car

Only around 650 Model A Duesenbergs were built between 1921 and 1926, and today, only 35 complete cars remain. During WWII, many were scrapped for their aluminium. The car featured here was nearly lost as well. After WWII, it was modified into a pickup truck and later turned into a hot rod.

In 2004, collector Robin Onsoien purchased the car at an auction. He restored it over six years, carefully recreating its original look with aluminium over wood framing and a two-tone grey finish.
